This best of the classical music world continues to play at the BBC Proms and this week the Royal Albert Hall was home to the Viennese youth orchestra, the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester. Veteran conductor Sir Colin Davis was leading the orchestra and kept movement to a minimum, although he lost none of his control. The hall was given two Russians and Ravel, and despite their name, Mahler was not on the menu. A faultless performance by Stravinsky’s Symphony in Three Movements was enjoyed by the young players who seemed to relish the composer’s love of their instruments. The orchestra never strayed for a moment during Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony, while Ravel’s ‘Shéhérazade’ was pure sensual orientalism.

A Movie Review on EDGE OF DARKNESS

“Edge of Darkness” is originally a BBC mini-series film and was brought to life in the big screen by Director Martin Campbell. Mel Gibson plays as Tom Craven, a Boston Police detective.  When she heard that her daughter was finally coming home, he was extremely happy. But his happiness was short-lived since only a few hours after their arrival, his daughter was shot on the chest by a masked man while walking out the front door. Initially Craven thought that the bullet was meant for him and blames himself for his daughter’s misfortune. Later he realized that the bullet was indeed meant for his daughter and left him asking “why”? His pursuit led him to the people Emma has worked for, her friends and even lover. It swore vengeance for his daughter’s death and would not stop until he put all the people responsible in their grave. Mel Gibson never seizes to give a well rounded performance each and every single time he appears on the big screen. The story was brilliantly brought to life, adding excitement and puzzling feeling towards the audience. If you crave for a great action film, you would enjoy the numerous car chases and fight scenes between Craven and the bad guys he was pursuing. “Edge of Darkness” would surely leave you guessing till the end with who the bad guys are and the motives. It also involves several and common family issues in the likes of seeking family help in times of grave danger. The story is quite annoying at times since, Emma did not even leave clues or traces as to how his father would be able to help her in finding the people behind her death. But still, being a great and persuasive detective has managed to bring everything into place. There are negative issues that have been brought out such as showing how the government can’t be trusted in terms of achieving justice. Hence, it seems more appropriate to seek out the bad guys yourself and make them pay for their wrong doings. Mel Gibson has always given his best for every movie I’ve ever seen him played or even directed. But if truth be told, the movie ended too depressing, beginning and ending with more killings. The search took more time and effort to understand, losing my interest half way through the movie time. Maybe it was really intended to leave the audience on the edge of darkness with its twists and turns.
